San Antonio ISD prepared for cold weather as students return to class, district says

District closed all of its schools in January 2024 because of heating, HVAC issues

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) said it is prepared for winter weather as students return for classes.

In a statement to KSAT on Monday evening, a district spokesperson said its operations team had been “preparing for winter weather since summer,” and all relevant systems had been serviced.

“Over the weekend, staff walked all campuses to ensure our buildings were ready to receive staff and students this week when cold weather is expected. We have not experienced any major issues today; however, we are working with a few schools on single classroom issues,” the statement reads.

The district did not immediately indicate what those issues were.

The preparations by SAISD come after the district’s handling of cold weather issues in January 2024; the district closed all its schools for several days because of a lack of heating and HVAC issues.

SAISD Superintendent Dr. Jaime Aquino blamed the issues on human error and widespread system error.

At a subsequent news conference on the issue, Aquino estimated about 70% of schools had experienced some degree of heating system failure.

Last May, SAISD released a 38-page report breaking down the district’s handling of the HVAC issues.

As for the classes in the spring, the district is continuing to prepare its schools and staff.

“We look forward to welcoming our students back into classrooms tomorrow following their winter break,” according to the statement. “As always, principals are prepared with mitigation strategies in the event action is needed to maintain comfortable learning and working environments.”
