How to prepare your vehicle for a trip during any cold snap

Check tires, battery before Texas cold snap hits

SAN ANTONIO – The entire state of Texas is bracing for severe cold conditions, prompting AAA to advise drivers to prepare an emergency kit for their vehicles.

AAA’s recommended items include a flashlight with extra batteries, drinking water, warm gloves, and blankets.

Additionally, ensuring your vehicle is in top condition before hitting the road during this cold snap is crucial, said Charissa Barnes, owner of Official Inspection Station.

“One of the things that we can do very easily is take a look at our windshield wipers. Make sure they’re brand new, make sure they properly work, and look at the fluids,” Barnes said. “Let’s make sure we have our fluids topped off. When you get an oil change, let’s do that. And really, really importantly — it’s very important that we look at our tire pressure. And if it has dropped because it is cold, we need to raise it up to the standards.”

Experts also advise checking your vehicle’s battery, as most batteries tend to encounter issues after three to five years of use. Many auto parts retailers offer free battery checks.
