SAN ANTONIO – A teenager was charged with murder and evading arrest after hitting and killing a woman with his vehicle while fleeing from police, according to a preliminary report from SAPD.
Covert detectives were conducting a narcotics investigation on a person believed to be in possession of a large amount of narcotics at a location on the South Side, an SAPD preliminary report said.
The driver, identified as 19-year-old Leo Pinero, left the location, and nearby marked police units attempted to pull the vehicle over in the 900 block of Pyron Avenue around 12:15 a.m.
Pinero did not stop and drove away at a high rate of speed. The marked units did not chase the vehicle. Instead, SAPD’s Eagle helicopter kept a watch on the vehicle, the report said.
Pinero’s vehicle then traveled toward Pleasanton Road at a high rate of speed before losing control, crashing into a guardrail and then hitting a woman on a nearby sidewalk, according to police.
Pinero then attempted to flee on foot; however, officers were able to apprehend him.
The unidentified woman was later pronounced dead by EMS officials.
Editor’s note: An initial report from police said there were two occupants in the car, and the second person was not located. SAPD’s report does not mention a second person in the vehicle. KSAT has reached out to SAPD for clarification on the discrepancy.
