Suspect fatally shot during confrontation over stolen packages on Southeast Side, San Antonio police say

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police are investigating a fatal shooting that resulted from a confrontation over stolen packages on the Southeast Side.

Officers responded to the scene just after 10:40 a.m. Wednesday near the 2500 block of Goliad Road after receiving reports of a burglary at an apartment complex.

A gunshot was heard upon the officers arriving, according to police.

Officers found 33-year-old Anthony Ortiz with a gunshot wound. The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled his death a homicide on Thursday afternoon.

The shooter, identified as a 44-year-old man, was standing nearby holding a firearm and was immediately detained for questioning.

Police said Ortiz was seen stealing packages from apartment doorsteps when the 44-year-old man confronted him.

The situation escalated when Ortiz assaulted the man and fled the scene on foot.

The 44-year-old man pursued Ortiz, who pulled out a knife and a stun gun, threatening him, police said.

The 44-year-old man then drew a firearm and fired a single round, striking Ortiz, according to SAPD.

Ortiz was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The investigation remains ongoing. No charges have been filed at this time.
