Officials with City Council District 5 and San Antonio’s Public Works Department are revisiting a portion of Probandt Street that will undergo design improvements over the coming years.

The work, part of the 2022-2027 bond program, is expected to include a range of roadway improvements along Probandt Street, which includes several residential access points.

Amador Salazar, communications director for the District 5 office, said the improvements are expected to include safety for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.

The project is expected to begin construction in Spring 2027 and conclude in Spring 2029, according to Nicholas Olivier, a public relations manager with the department. The construction would begin at South Alamo Street and end near Highway 90.

ActivateSA, a community organization advocating for a more connected San Antonio, held what it described as a “street audit” on part of Probandt Street last February.

The street audit, according to the group’s website, is “an assessment of the pedestrian safety, accessibility, and comfort of a particular area.”

The audit discerns and identifies where pedestrian safety improvements can be made.

What followed was a tool allowing users to view various roadway and safety issues.

Pawlik expects last year’s findings to be part of the larger conversation on Tuesday as the designs are presented.

“We have shared the findings directly with the Public Works department, and they have referenced how they’ve found the Street Audit input data resourceful in past meetings,” Pawlik said in an email to KSAT.

As for an example of what he would like to see come from the project, Pawlik said he hopes for “a cultural corridor that accommodates and prioritizes the safety and comfort of cyclists and pedestrians.”

The meeting will take place at 331 Roosevelt Ave. at 6 p.m.
