NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – Two men who allegedly caused a fatal vehicle crash that killed a father in New Braunfels were given an immigration detainer, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
New Braunfels police arrested Rafael Alejandro Arreguin-Ramirez, 25, and Alejandro Aguillen-Acosta, 23, on Sept. 12. Records show both were charged with intoxication manslaughter, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and evading arrest.

Arreguin-Ramirez allegedly drove his truck while intoxicated in the 2500 block of FM 725 and crashed head-on into a sedan carrying Alejandro Nunez, 27, along with his 3-year-old daughter, according to New Braunfels police.
Nunez was pronounced dead at the scene and his daughter was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said Aguillen-Acosta was a passenger of the truck. He allegedly fled the scene after impact and hid in a nearby neighborhood.
On Sept. 13, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement placed a detainer on both Arreguin-Ramirez and Aguillen-Acosta while they were booked into the Guadalupe County Jail, according to a news release.
The release said DHS requested that Texas officials keep the two suspects in custody.
DHS’ secretary said the fatal crash could have been preventable.
“ICE has lodged detainers asking our partners in Texas to cooperate with us so that these criminals can be removed from our country after they face justice,” Mullin said in the release. “My thoughts and prayers are with Alex Nunez’s family, as well as for the child’s speedy recovery.”
DHS alleges both suspects entered the country illegally from Mexico.
