SAN ANTONIO – A man was hospitalized Sunday after he was shot at by four San Antonio police officers on the West Side, Police Chief Jesse Salame said during a news conference.
The San Antonio Police Department said Jacob Rigo Luna, 31, was taken into custody around 6:15 p.m. near the 1700 block of Horal Drive with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
On Monday, police told KSAT he was booked on three criminal offenses. Records show Luna faces two counts of aggravated assault and a drug possession charge.
Four undercover SAPD officers were following Luna because he had an active drug warrant connected to him. Salame said police drove and trailed Luna to a hotel and gas station to verify it was the suspect the officers were looking for.
At some point, Luna realized he was being followed, and he waved his gun out the vehicle’s window, Salame said.

Luna fired his weapon at the officers following him, Salame said. All undercover officers fired back at Luna, according to an SAPD spokesperson.
It’s unclear if SAPD and Luna exchanged gunfire while driving on the West Side. KSAT has reached out to SAPD for clarification.
“There were a couple other vehicles caught in the crossfire,” Salame said on Sunday. “There were no bystanders, thankfully, that were injured.”
An SAPD preliminary report names the four officers who shot at Luna:
- Officer A. Espinoza #1172, eight years of service
- Detective S. Elderkin #2025, eight years of service
- Officer J. Torres-Rosado #1149, nine years of service
- Detective A. Vargas #2138, 10 years of service
In an attempt to detain Luna, the report said the suspect caused multiple traffic collisions, including hitting another vehicle. Luna eventually crashed into a tree and attempted to flee away from officers on foot, Salame said.
The report describes Luna collapsing to the ground a short distance away from the crashed vehicle, which is where police took Luna into custody. SAPD also found a handgun inside the crashed vehicle.
Though he was found in critical condition, SAPD said Luna “is expected to survive.”
All four officers who shot at Luna were placed on administrative leave, which is a common practice for police shootings.
One passenger was taken into custody, and another got away while SAPD chased Luna down.
