Victim expected to recover

SAN ANTONIO – A 90-year-old man had to be admitted to a hospital and given morphine, his son said, after he suffered about 1,000 bee stings on the West Side on Wednesday.

Artemio Ortega was visiting one of his rental properties under repair on S. Brazos Street and Nancy when the bees attacked him and three other workers.

Ortega's son, Daniel Ortega, said all four had to be taken to the hospital. Artemio Ortega remained there Wednesday night, still sore and swollen from the stings.

Daniel Ortega said when his father arrived to the emergency room, he still had two bees in each ear.

"I got a call from my sister that she was trying to reach out to him, but he wasn't answering his phone," Daniel Ortega said. "Then, my sister gets a call from a neighbor that there's a bunch of ambulances here at the house."

Artemio Ortega is expected to recover, but is being watched closely because of his age.

Daniel Ortega was also stung once during the interview Wednesday. He said he's working on getting someone to come out and get rid of the colony of bees.
