Because he was not feeling well, Stewart was issued his medal during a bedside ceremony.

Stewart was a staff sergeant serving in the Army Air Corps at Hickam Field in Hawaii during the attack by the Japanese on the naval installation in 1941.

He retired in 1973 after 36 years of service.

In 2005, he and his wife moved to what was then known as Air Force Village in San Antonio.
