SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio Missions representatives on Thursday broke their silence about their plans to bring a Triple-A team to the Alamo City.
KSAT reported Wednesday that the Double-A team will be heading to Amarillo, but will be leaving the Missions name behind.
Triple-A is a step below the major leagues and is expected to bring lots of upcoming stars, as well as major leaguers who are rehabbing or working on their game, officials said.
“I think San Antonio is ready for Triple-A baseball. I think it’s going to be a lot of fun, said Mark Millingan, a Missions fan.

“It’s just pure baseball. (I) played all my life. (I) pitched Little League. Never did go any further than that but had fun doing it,” said John Layman, a baseball fan.
The new Missions will play at Wolff Stadium for the first couple of years. The Missions organization said it will make sure the team can play in a stadium fit for a Triple-A team. Representatives will be looking for solutions to make that happen.
“You can have a ballpark as an acre and find developers that will go around that with restaurants, bars and apartments,” said Burl Yarbough, Missions president.
The Triple-A baseball team is scheduled to start playing in 2019. It’s unclear which Major League Baseball affiliate the new Missions will be.
“There has been talk even before we knew we would get a Triple-A team about a possible new stadium, possibly in downtown,” Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff said.
Renovations to Wolff stadium could cost between $30 million to $40 million, and county officials said a new stadium would cost about $80 million to $85 million.
