Murder trial begins for woman who called herself, co-defendant ‘Bonnie and Clyde'

Antoinette Martinez accused of killing two teenagers

SAN ANTONIO – She is accused of luring her victims to her apartment for sex but instead robbed and killed them, prosecutors said.

Antoinette Martinez, and her co-defendant, Cameo Cline, are charged with killing two teens and dumping their bodies in rural Bexar County.

That is what prosecutors told the jury as Martinez’ capital murder trial began Tuesday morning.

“They went from being friends, to, in her own words, Bonnie and Clyde,” prosecutor Mari Janssen told the jury during her opening statement.

The first victim, Xavier Cordero, 19, was killed on June 18, 2014. He was the son of a SAPD officer. The second victim, Steven Rendon, 19, was killed five days later.

“You’re going to hear her again and again, say over and over, that she needed money and that she gets what she wants,” Janssen told the jury, referring to Martinez’ recorded interview with detectives following her arrest.

Cline pleaded guilty to murder charges in the case in January 2016 as part of a plea agreement. He is serving two life sentences plus a 20-year sentence on a burglary conviction.

If she is convicted of capital murder, Martinez is facing life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Testimony is expected to continue Wednesday morning in Judge Cathrine Torres-Stahl’s 175th District Court.
