The wait is over for Patrick Mahomes and other Whataburger fans in the Kansas City area as the first Missouri location opened up on Monday.

The San Antonio-based burger chain opened a restaurant in Lee’s Summit, near Kansas City, to plenty of fanfare and long lines.

And by long lines, we mean there was traffic on the interstate within minutes of opening.

The Whataburger opened its doors at 11 a.m., and by 11:03 a.m., the Kansas City District of Missouri Department of Transportation Tweeted a video of a line of cars down the street.

At 11:13 a.m., another Tweet showed the traffic building up on Interstate 470.

MoDOT also reported a crash near the I-470 exit to the Whataburger.

Whataburger says several other restaurants are in the works for the Kansas City area. The next opening is in Independence, Missouri on Nov. 29.

The chain has partnered with fast-food franchise KMO Burger to open at least six locations in 2022 and two locations in 2023.

Mahomes, who grew up in Texas, is a partner in the KMO Burger group.

Social media users joked that the new location gave Mahomes a boost for the Chiefs’ win against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.
