SAN ANTONIO – North East ISD schools are fighting child hunger through a system called the "share table."
The share table allows students to donate unopened breakfast bars, cereal bowls, dry snacks and uncut fresh fruit to the share table. Items from the share table are then given to hungry students or students who can't afford meals or a snack.

"We have kids who definitely come hungry and want some extra food," Cody Miller, Hidden Forrest Elementary principal said.
The donations are also distributed to sister schools for their backpack programs.
The share table is made possible through Senate Bill 725, which went into effect on June 9. The bill allows donated food to be stored and distributed on the campus. It also allows schools to provide food "at no cost to a student for breakfast, lunch or dinner meals or a snack" if the student is unable to purchase it.
The bi-partisan bill was introduced to the senate in February and was signed into effectin June, to be effective immediately.
