North East ISD considers new sex education program

New curriculum more in depth on STDs, has more interactivity

SAN ANTONIO – The North East Independent School District held a meeting Tuesday with the Student Health Advisory Council to inform the community on the council's recommendations for a new sex education program.

The council looks into whether the curriculum needs to be changed every three years.

Council recommendations for the new program would include more in-depth information about sexually transmitted diseases and more interactive elements.

Even so, the district continues to stress that abstinence is key.

"The only thing that is 100 percent effective is, of course, abstinence. And we stress that, but we do also offer other tools -- barrier methods -- that, if they choose to go another route, then they'll have that information. The state actually mandates that we provide that," district spokeswoman Aubrey Chancellor said.

The recommendations will eventually be presented to the school board for approval. If approved, the changes will be implemented for the next school year.

The district requires parent permission for students to receive the sex education curriculum.
