Safety warning issued for fidget spinners ahead of new school year

Fidget spinners are popular with children, adults

No description found

SAN ANTONIO – The fidget spinner craze has hit children and adults alike, and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is issuing safety tips ahead of the school season.

Parents are being warned not to let children less than three years old play with the popular toys because small pieces, like batteries and ball bearings, can be a choking hazard.

Choking incidents have been reported in children as old as 14.

It’s important to warn children not to put the fidget spinners near their faces or in their mouths.

“There have been some reports of fires involving battery-operated fidget spinners,” CPSC acting chairman Ann Marie Buerkle said.

For battery operated fidget spinners, the CPSC advises that consumers unplug the toys overnight and only use the cable that comes with the spinner.

Some schools might have adopted policies about fidget spinners.
