SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg declared Wednesday the official start of STEM week for the city.
Together with the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, city leaders working together to help the next generation of students.
They want to focus on getting more Latinos and girls into careers dealing with science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Throughout the week, students from five inner-city schools will get to explore different areas of STEM.
"What we need to do as a community is focus on these skills because these are increasingly required for every job and career path a student will acquire in the future,” Nirenberg said. “For jobs that we know exist today; for jobs that we aren't sure quite what they'll be."
City leaders said by the year 2020, nearly 60 percent of jobs will require a STEM-related degree.
STEM week runs through Nov. 8.
