SAN ANTONIO – For the third time this month, San Antonio police were involved in a shooting.
The latest shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. Friday when three officers shot a 19-year-old man after he opened fire on them in the 3300 block of West Woodlawn on the city's West Side, police Chief William McManus said.
The man, identified as Juan Manuel Rogelio-Gonzalez, had been involved in an earlier incident on the other side of town, where officers tried to initiate a traffic stop near Interstate 35 and W.W. White Road, McManus said.
"The car was driving erratically. The driver was all over the road, and that's when the officers decided to stop him," McManus said.

Instead of pulling over, Gonzalez sped off, McManus said.
As per department policy, the officers did not engage in a chase. Instead, with help from the department's helicopter, they were able to keep track of Gonzalez and get his license plate number.
A team of officers was sent to a home on West Woodlawn Avenue, which was the listed address for the car. Gonzalez drove up a few minutes later, McManus said.
"Once they tried to get him out of the car, he got out with a gun and started shooting. Officers returned fire," McManus said. "None of the officers were hurt, fortunately. We've had way, way too much of that lately."
Gonzalez was wounded multiple times. He was taken to University Hospital in critical condition, where he will be charged by proxy with attempted capital murder and evading arrest, police said.
Officers were also forced to shoot a suspect on Wednesday, when a robbery suspect opened fire on an officer at an apartment complex in the 6100 block of Ingram Road.

The suspect, Giovani Casiano, died of his wounds, police said. Officer Nathan Becerra was wounded and is expected to recover.
Police confronted another armed man July 17 outside a home in the 1800 block of Plaza del Sol.
Officers shot and killed Jose Casares, 37, after he threatened a child, then pointed a gun in their direction, police officials said.
