SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police Officer Julio Cavazos was released from a hospital Tuesday, police officials said.

Cavazos was hospitalized at San Antonio Military Medical Center since Thursday when he was injured during a shootout near downtown.

"He and his family want to thank everyone for their prayers and support during this difficult time," police spokesman Sgt. Jesse Salame said in an email. "They also ask for continued prayers and support for the Moreno and Kurtz families."

Police Chief William McManus said that Cavazos and his partner Officer Miguel Moreno were investigating car burglaries when they approached two men at the intersection of West Evergreen Street and North Main Avenue. One of the men immediately began firing at Moreno and Cavazos, striking Cavazos in the chin and Moreno in the head, police said.

McManus said Cavazos, though injured, pulled Moreno out of the gunfire and returned fire at the two suspects, striking the gunman once.

Moreno died a day later.

The gunman, identified as 34-year-old Andrew Bice, committed suicide at the scene. The man who was with him during the shootout, 30-year-old William Lawson, was arrested on Saturday on new charges.
