Sebastian De La Cruz, 12, donates $1,000 to Kitty Hawk Middle School

Money donated to choir department

The sweet sound of music just got a bit sweeter for the choir department at Kitty Hawk Middle School.

A donation to the tune of $1000 will be going to support the elective. The money was a generous donation from a well-known, talented sixth-grader from San Antonio.

"It just makes me feel good to know that I'm doing a good deed for my school," said Sebastian De La Cruz, 12, who made the donation.

De La Cruz captivated the nation with his rendition of the Star Spangled Banner during the San Antonio Spurs' playoff run in 2013.

Controversy, mainly about his attire, catapulted him to stardom. De La Cruz humbly used that stardom to give back, after receiving a donation from the Hispanic Scholarship Fund.

"They actually donated it to me and they asked me what I would like to do with it," said De La Cruz.

It was an easy decision, he said. The money would go to his beloved, first-period class.

"(Choir) is something I can wake up to (and) look forward to seeing my friends, seeing my teachers and being like, 'Oh, I am going to be able to sing today,'" said De La Cruz. "That's going to be something great."

It is the young singer's humility that really impressed those at Kitty Hawk Middle School. As for exactly how that money will be used in the choir department, that decision has yet to be made.

"I'm going to talk with Sebastian about that and see what he feels he wants it for, because I want it to be something lasting," said Kitty Hawk Middle School Choir Teacher Glenda Wood.

De La Cruz credited music for changing his life and hoped with this donation to pay it forward.

"It makes me feel like I'm doing the right thing and I'm being a better person," he said.
