Cantu would have been 14-years-old on Sunday.

"Today is his birthday," said Brooke Nava, Cantu's friend. "He would want us to be here to celebrate."

His classmates lit prayer candles and candles on a birthday cake they brought for him.

"We want everyone to remember him," said  Divinity Garay, a friend of Cantu's. "He will never be forgotten even though he is not here with us."

Most of the students at the vigil wore red because that was Cantu's favorite color.

Some of his friends made special frames for his birthday and even brought balloons.

According to police, Cantu was standing outside of an apartment complex with his stepbrother on  Friday night when someone walked up to them and shot Cantu in the head.

However, Cantu's guardian, Francis Zarazua, claims the shooting was an accident and that her son, Jesus Trevino, 22, was just showing Cantu the gun when it went off.

Cantu's friends said the shooting is something that shouldn't have happened.

"There's always a bullet left inside a gun," said  Desirae Garay, Cantu's friend. "No matter if it has one or not or if you believe it or not, you are never supposed to point a gun to somebody's face."

Although Cantu's guardian said the shooting was an accident, Jesus Trevino, 22, still faces murder charges and is currently in custody at the Bexar County Jail.

As of Sunday, the family was trying to raise money for the funeral.
