SAN ANTONIO – The man police said went on a rampage in February, carjacking a friend and running over several people, is now charged with capital murder.
Police said Manuel Garcia, 40, stole his friend's car Feb. 18 around 6 p.m. and proceeded to run over several people on the city's East Side.
Samuel White, 53, and Patrick Moore, 58, were hit by Garcia and died from their injuries. Four other people were seriously injured in the rampage.
After hitting the victims, Garcia drove away from the scene at Iowa and Pine streets. He was then involved in a major crash at Commerce and Cherry streets.
He then fled on foot before being apprehended by witnesses, who restrained Garcia until police arrived.
Garcia was initially charged with robbery. Further investigation provided law enforcement probable cause to charge Garcia with capital murder in the deaths of White and Moore.
The San Antonio Police Department said Garcia is being held at the Bexar County Jail and said more charges are expected to be filed.
Garcia faces two counts of capital murder.
Criminal History
Garcia's criminal history goes back more than 20 years and includes charges of assault and vehicle burglary.
In 2003, Garcia received a felony conviction for robbery and a seven year prison term.
After his release from the 2003 conviction, Garcia was back in jail for theft in 2010.
A car burglary in 2011 landed Garcia behind bars yet again.
In 2013, the repeat offender pleaded no contest to a charge of theft. He received two years in state jail.
Garcia was released in January and placed on parole.
His parole ended Wednesday, three days before his latest charge of two counts of capital murder.
