SAN ANTONIO – Deputies were called out to a northwest Bexar County home to serve a mental health warrant Tuesday night at which they were met with gunfire when they entered.
Sheriff Javier Salazar said the mental health unit had a mental health warrant for a man in his 60s and were performing a wellness check on an elderly woman living in the home in the 9200 block of Saddle Trail. A mental health warrant is granted to an arresting officer to take a person into custody to get that person treatment.
When deputies arrived around 7 p.m., they were met with gunfire when they entered the home. They were in tactical gear and the one shot fired hit a deputy’s shield.
Deputies then retreated without firing a shot, Salazar said.
Negotiators had quickly established contact with the man inside the house. They lost the connection and are trying to get in contact with the man to see if everyone in the home is OK.
Deputies are asking people to avoid the area and for neighbors to stay inside their homes while the situation is resolved.
