Texas' 1 windshield sticker now in effect

Motorists now only need sticker for registration, not inspection

SAN ANTONIO – The new Texas vehicle registration renewal process known as "Two Steps, One Sticker" went into effect on Sunday.

Vehicle owners now only need one sticker on their windshields. Instead of both a registration sticker and inspection stickers, owners now only need a registration sticker.

Drivers wanting to renew their vehicle registration must now first have their vehicle pass a state inspection. Texans will then be given a vehicle inspection report needed for registration renewal. The report can be turned in along with proof of insurance in order to get a vehicle's registration renewed.

Inspectors will also upload the results of an inspection to the state's database. Motorists' cars must pass inspection before they can get a registration sticker.

Texas motorists must still get vehicles inspected every year to make sure the brakes, tires, turn signals and more are road-worthy.

Many cars currently have inspection and registration stickers showing two different months. To help consumers figure out what to do when, the state's website TwoStepsOneSticker.com includes a calculating tool. Motorist can type in the expiration months, and the tool will advise what steps to take.
