SAN ANTONIO – The Texas Funeral Service Commission is investigating San Antonio's Southern Memorial Park Eastview Cemetery after a woman claimed that the cemetery lost her mother's body in a flood and has given her the runaround in response.
Two months ago, a grieving woman complained the unkempt grounds at the cemetery made it difficult to find her mother's tombstone.
Another complaint was raised recently -- this time from a woman whose mother was buried at the same cemetery 11 years ago.
"There was a hole in the ground where her coffin is. It was cratered in and you could see in, but there was nothing there," said Crystal Morris.
Morris said everything changed after a flood.
She claims her mother's body has been missing ever since, and that she's gotten the runaround from the cemetery employees for years.
In response to a complaint filed by Morris with the Texas Funeral Service Commission in January, the cemetery's attorney, Nicole Henning, claims there are no missing bodies.
"We are ready and prepared to provide the public with any information they need in order to find their loved ones," Henning said.
Texas Funeral Service Commission Executive Director Kevin Heyburn said the next step is likely a trip to San Antonio, followed by a more in depth investigation.
"Once we acquire that information, it will give us a better idea of what we can do and if there, in fact, was a violation and what we can do about that," Heyburn said.
Henning blames a lack of communication for the complaints.
In an effort to bridge that gap, she is requesting anyone with similar complaints about the same cemetery to contact her directly via email at, nehlaw@sbcglobal.net.
