Navasota ISD says Daniel Byrd has been placed on administrative leave

Handcuffs jail prison

COLLEGE STATION – A teacher at Navasota High School has been arrested after federal authorities say he viewed and shared files of child pornography on social media.

Daniel Byrd, 29, has been charged with the distribution and possession of child pornography, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. He was taken into custody on Thursday and made his initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Andrew M. Edison on Friday.

Federal authorities say Byrd, who lives in College Station, was in charge of a folder that contained child pornography that was being shared in a Kik chat group.

He would use Kik and Telegram to look at and download the files. He joined groups “dedicated to sharing child pornography” and downloaded the files to his MEGA account, the release states.

He would then share the link to his MEGA account on Kik, allowing users to see the content, authorities said.

Navasota ISD told KBTX that he has been placed on administrative leave, and they don’t believe students or staff were involved.

If convicted, Byrd could face up to 20 years in prison for the distribution of child pornography and up to 10 years for possessing it.

The FBI and College Station Police Department conducted the investigation.
