Train derails near neighborhood on SW Side, thousands without power

10 cars jumped track, no one hurt, firefighters say

SAN ANTONIO – A train has derailed on the city's Southwest Side early Friday morning.

Emergency crews were called to Quintana Road and Briggs Avenue just before 4 a.m. for the derailment. Officials said somewhere around a dozen cars, some carrying Toyota trucks, jumped the track near a neighborhood.

Officials said railroad workers were doing a maneuver where they move train cars around and at least one of them got away from them causing the derailment. No one was injured and materials in some of the train cars are not hazardous.

A CPS Energy worker said a fiber optic line is down and that there is also a broken power pole. 2,000 people lost electricity and could be without power for several hours, firefighters said.

Police said Quintana Road is shut down until this afternoon but that there are ways around the accident.

This is a developing story that will be updated as more information becomes available.
