Vandals strike at least 5 Stone Oak neighborhood mailbox clusters

SAN ANTONIO – Neighbors in the Stone Oak area are upset after at least five clusters of mailboxes were broken into.

The break-ins happened near Hardy Oak Boulevard and Stone Oak Parkway. And neighbors said this isn’t the first time this has happened.

“It started happening at the beginning of December. Now it's started twice a month every other week,” resident Dean Lashway said.

The holiday season and tax season are when most crooks strike, in the hopes of getting their hands pricey gifts and tax refunds.

A drive through the neighborhood found that at least five clusters had been vandalized.

“It’s troubling because, you know, we don't always come to check our mail. We had been fortunate to have checked ours before this got hit,” resident Joshua Rockhold said.

Signs have been posted on the mailboxes reminding people to pick up their mail daily. U.S. Postal inspectors said if you’re expecting a check or other valuable mail, don’t leave it overnight.

Neighbors in the area said they want more lighting around the mailboxes and even some surveillance cameras.

“I would like to see new mailboxes that aren't so easy to break into,” Lashway said.

If you believe your mail has been stole, call postal inspectors at 877-876-2455. You can also report suspicious activity.

It is a federal crime to vandalize mailboxes. If you’re convicted, you could be sent to prison for up to three years for each count of vandalism.
