SAN ANTONIO – The immigrant advocacy group RAICES will host a vigil Sunday night at San Fernando Cathedral to honor the human trafficking victims found in a big rig trailer in San Antonio earlier that morning.

Eight people were found dead and another 30 were rescued from the trailer after a Walmart employee alerted police. The employee said a man approached him the parking lot of the Walmart, located at 8358 Interstate 35 South on the city’s southwest side, begging for water.
Police found the survivors “hot to the touch” and showing signs of heat stroke and dehydration. Among the rescued victims, who police said are in their 20s and 30s, are two 15-year-olds.
Police took the driver of the 18-wheeler into custody on state and federal charges.
“RAICES mourns this tragic loss of life,” a spokesman said on behalf of the group. “We hope and pray for the survivors to recover quickly and find peace, safety, and justice. This heartbreaking situation highlights the lengths that migrants will go to seek refuge in the United States. We value, honor, and respect migrant lives.”
The vigil will begin at 6 p.m. at San Fernando Cathedral, at 115 Main Plaza.
