SAN ANTONIO – Two would-be ATM thieves put forth a lot of effort but left a North Side convenience store empty-handed, San Antonio police said Tuesday.
Officers responded to the Citgo store at the corner of San Pedro and Sandau Street shortly after 5 a.m.
They said the store owner called after noticing a mess in a back store room. Officers determined that someone had gotten inside the business by entering through an unlocked utility closet, then cutting a hole in the dry wall separating the two.
Police said once inside, the criminals attempted to remove the ATM which was bolted to the floor. They said they found a tow strap and saw that were left behind.
After realizing the machine wouldn't budge the criminals gave up, police said.
Officers said the store alarm did not go off and the criminals were hidden from view by the solid, rolling security gates that covered the front door and windows.
They plan to review surveillance video from the store to learn more about the burglars.
