This is what getting stung by a ‘murder hornet’ looks and feels likeEven though the hornets are still hundreds of miles away from our area, it has been a topic of discussion in the South Texas area for months. If the hornet does survive the colder months, there is a possibility it could migrate to states farther south, including Texas where the weather is warmer. So there’s not a lack of food to prevent them from coming down here.”Honeybees are vital to our ecosystem and environment, especially in South Texas. I just don’t think we have these just yet.”Keck said for the moment, there is not a reason to be overly concerned in South Texas. She said it will take time to study the “murder hornet” in the United States and follow its breeding and migration patterns.

SAN ANTONIO – As Texas moves to reopen its economy, there has been some confusion between what businesses can start operating. Traders Village San Antonio found itself in the middle of the confusion after Gov. Other flea markets in Texas that opened this past weekend include Traders Village Grand Prairie and Traders Village Houston. The mayor of San Antonio addressed why the flea markets could not open during Monday's daily COVID-19 briefing. We will work to confirm this information and the details so that Traders Village can re-open this weekend .

SAN ANTONIO – When the coronavirus pandemic hit South Texas, the Salvation Army of San Antonio worked quickly to ensure its shelter residents would be safe. “We’re not taking the traffic indoors, so we’ve moved our canteen truck outside,” said Brad Mayhar, spokesperson for the Salvation Army of San Antonio. “When people donate through our local Salvation Army web site, the money stays local and it helps our local programs here in San Antonio,” said Mayhar. SAN ANTONIO – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has now officially recommended that everyone but infants should wear a cloth mask or face covering in certain public settings to prevent the spread of COVID-19. In addition, San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg announced Monday that Metro Health officials recommend anyone over five years old wear a cloth face covering over their nose and mouth in public. The CDC has a section on its website dedicated to making a homemade face mask or a cloth covering. - Be careful not to touch your eyes, nose, and mouth when removing the face covering and wash your hands immediately after its removed. The cloth face coverings recommended are not surgical masks or N-95 respirators, the CDC says.

Do active shooter drills impact students? The group made recommendations on active shooter drills and proactive school safety solutions. Shelley Potter, president of the San Antonio Alliance of Teachers and Support Personnel, the union that represents San Antonio ISD teachers and employees, said the organization is talking with teachers about lockdown drills and collecting information. Are active shooter drills in schools doing more harm than good? San Antonio ISD said it conducts lockdown drills that are announced and initiated by school administrators.

SAN ANTONIO – Micro-hospitals are built in areas where there’s a need but not a big enough demand for a traditional hospital. Baptist Health System is opening a micro-hospital called Baptist Emergency Hospital near Cupples Road and Highway 90. Micro-hospitals are good for minor emergencies, like if someone breaks a leg or if someone thinks they are having a heart attack. Stone said micro-hospitals are cheaper than full-service hospitals because they’re not as large, and they aren’t set up to treat everything. The Baptist Health System micro-hospital will open by the end of the month.

The commission voted 7-4 to approve a new location for the Cenotaph. The commission had tabled the item two weeks ago because of concerns over a pending lawsuit between a local indigenous group and the state and city. San Antonio – The city’s Historic and Design Review Commission tabled an item involving the first phase of the Alamo Plaza redesign this week, which includes the relocation of the Cenotaph. Tap Pilam believes the Alamo site is a cemetery where American Indians are buried, so it should be officially recognized as such. “The plan includes reclaiming the site, closing Alamo Street, closing portions of Crockett Street. Zion First Baptist Church on Martin Luther King Drive has served the San Antonio community and opened its doors to those in need. “The church was there for a long time until 1924 when they marched from Santos Street to this current location and they built this church,” said Rev. It continues to serve community members, no matter what race or social status. “We’re here to do God’s will and not just to look good or to say, look how long we’ve been here,” said Rev. “We want people to say, ‘look what God is doing.’”There are generations of families that have walked through the doors and worshipped at Mt.

SAN ANTONIO – The nonprofit Girls Inc. and City Council members have teamed up to empower middle school girls before they start classes. It’s for reasons such as these that Girls Inc. has continued its annual back-to-school conference for middle school girls, which is now in its fourth year. “(Girls would) be rude and ugly to each other instead of being nice and helpful and positive,” said Ivori Chapman, a seventh grader at Longfellow Middle School. She knows all too well that being a girl in middle school is hard. Mia Cardenas, a seventh grader at Concordia Middle School, said she has also experienced bullying.

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Chili Queens was a group of women who brought flavor and spice to the San Antonio food scene for nearly 100 years. The Chili Queens started to set up their stands in the 1850s. “People always remember Chili Queens as being very enchanting, fiery, feisty,” said Cortez. In the 1900s, the Chili Queens moved to Market Square and introduced different tastes and ingredients to their food. The Chili Queens began to use cheddar cheese, which led to another San Antonio food staple.

SAN ANTONIO – Devils River Whiskey has been available at bars and liquor stores since 2017, but the president of the Dallas-based distillery is getting ready to open his first tasting room in San Antonio. "I went to the Devils River back in college and just thought it was a beautiful, really neat place," Cameron said. "To make good whiskey requires good water," Cameron said. The first product Devils River Whisky produced was a bourbon, followed by a rye. A percentage of the sale of each bottle of whiskey goes towards conserving the Devils River.

SAN ANTONIO – The foundation of the University of Incarnate Word can be traced back to a single letter in 1869, that was sent from a bishop in San Antonio to the Catholic sisters in France. The letter asked for the sisters to help take care of victims of a cholera outbreak in the city. “The sisters and the school always emphasized science, along with the humanities and the arts,” said Hinojosa. “At Christmas time we celebrate, the Nativity of the Lord, which is the celebration of the word incarnate,” Hinojosa said. “It's been a long haul from that little letter where the mayor needed help and bishop wrote for help for the sisters.”

The San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo is now one of the city's biggest events, but it began 69 years ago as something much smaller. The first San Antonio Rodeo was held on February 17, 1950, at the newly opened Joe and Harry Freeman Coliseum. In 1984, the rodeo began awarding scholarships to students in Texas. To date, the rodeo's educational committee has awarded more than $198 million to Texas students going into all fields of study. The San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo is in town until Feb. 24.

The Edwards Aquifer is responsible for providing millions of people from the Hill Country to San Antonio with freshwater every day. And although a lot of us know that the aquifer is our local source of water, very few understand exactly how the vast underground system works.

Stephanie Flores wasn’t always protecting our city from criminals and working as the LGBTQ liaison for the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office. It’s a way to assure the LGBTQ community that it’s not alone when dealing with situations that can sometimes be dangerous. The Sheriff's Office asks community members if there's a bigger need for law enforcement in their area and just asks general questions to make sure they feel safe. We have an animal rights activist, or a liaison, so it just can go in so many different directions, Flores said. “And especially as (the LGBTQ) community is also expanding in different aspects, we also have to expand within that community.”For more South Texas Pride stories, visit KSAT.com/SouthTexasPride.

Local leaders with the LGBTQ community and the nonprofit BEAT AIDS said it's a good first step, but it will take work to get to that goal. Michelle Durham, with BEAT AIDS, said it's a doable plan since there is already a national HIV/AIDS strategy to end the virus by 2030. Durham said there are about 7,000 people who currently have HIV or AIDS in San Antonio and 1.2 million in the country. BEAT AIDS is inviting the community to a free luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Second Baptist Church. February 7th is National HIV / AIDS Awareness Day!

Last week, Congress passed a farm bill that's expected to be signed into law by President Donald Trump. Among the provisions included in the massive piece of legislation -- hemp would be removed from the list of federally controlled substances and treated like any other agricultural crop.
