How to make Fiesta flower decorations out of recyclables

Fiesta decorating pro shares tips to DIY fabulous Porch Parade entries

SAN ANTONIO – The Fiesta Porch Parade is coming in June! Get ready to enter your home in the virtual contest with a few tips on how to make Fiesta flowers out of recyclables like a pro.

Fernando Villarreal decorated his front porch as an example for the upcoming Fiesta Porch Parade. He had a few tips for Mike and Fiona to go green with flashy decorations.

1. Save up your plastic bottles. The more colors you have, the better. You just cut them into strips from the top down and you have a show-stopping center for your Fiesta flowers.

2. Use stickers to put on the plastic bottle flower tips. This will add some color and it won’t cost much, if anything. You can even use stickers you already have on hand.

3. Use construction paper you already have. If you have a bunch of pieces of construction paper lying around, in various sizes, you can fray the edges to make attractive leaves and petals for your flowers.

4. Cardboard will withstand the weather. Break down those boxes, cut your cardboard into flowers, paint it and you’ll have a lasting decoration for years to come.

Here are some examples of how you can decorate for the 2021 Fiesta Porch Parade contest.

The virtual contest, which runs from April 23 to May 24, is a collaboration between the Battle of Flowers Association and San Antonio Fiesta Flambeau Parade Association, Inc., and is meant to encourage and support the spirit of Fiesta, safely. It marks the first time the two parade organizations have partnered.

KSAT joins the groups in calling on you to deck out your home, business or classroom with Fiesta colors and decor, and submit it on KSAT.com to enter to win prizes and, most importantly, Fiesta bragging rights. A total of 7 winners will be chosen.

You can enter the contest here starting on April 24. If you have questions about the contest, please click here to review our Q&A page.
