Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas celebrates 'Day of the Girl' Friday

Troop serves nearly 15,500 girls, helps girls in grades K-12 practice leadership

SAN ANTONIO – Tomorrow Girls Scouts will celebrate Day of the Girl, and what better way than to recognize all the Girl Scouts who go above and beyond to make their community better?

"The United Nations started Day of the Girl in 2011 and its one day around the world where we celebrate girls, their achievements and really raise awareness for the girls," said Stephanie Finleon Cortez, chief development and communications officer.

Day of the Girl

In the United States, Day of the Girl is a 100 percent youth-led movement to fight for gender justice and youth rights.

"Texas ranks 42nd in the nation when it comes to the factors that affect the wellbeing of girls," Cortez said. "We look at education, health, physical activities, extracurricular participation, emotional and behavioral disabilities."

Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas is powered by 5,000 adult volunteers, and serves nearly 15,500 girls in its 21-county jurisdiction.

Girl Scouts need your help!

"Half of the girls we serve locally do receive some form of financial assistance," Cortez said.
