Benefits of breastfeeding for moms and babies

SAN ANTONIO – September is Baby Safety Month and one way to keep your baby safe is to keep your baby healthy.

There are benefits for both babies and mothers when it comes to breastfeeding, but sometimes it can take a little practice to have it go smoothly.

University Hospital is helping moms get the hang of nursing. 

Breast milk also protects your little one from getting sick and lowers his or her risk of asthma, allergies and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

University Health System offers lactation services in breastfeeding classes taught in English and Spanish and individual consultations before and after birth. 

Breastfeeding benefits for moms 

  • Burns on average 600 calories a day 
  • Lowers risk of breast cancer 
  • Lowers risk of ovarian cancer and diabetes
