What to expect before, during, after LASIK eye surgery

LASIK is safe, effective, takes as little as 10-15 seconds for each eye

Are you ready to ditch your glasses or contacts for good?

If you are interested in having LASIK eye surgery, here are some things you can expect before, during and after your procedure. This list is compiled from Manrique Custom Vision Center for its patients.

Before the procedure

Once you are a qualified candidate for LASIK eye surgery, talk to your doctor about your past and present medical eye conditions, and if you are taking any medications.

The day before your procedure, it's advised to stop using eye makeup, creams, lotions and perfumes. The products could cause irritation during the procedure.

Try to arrange for transportation to and from your surgery. On the day of surgery, your doctor may give you some medicine to make you relax. It always helps to have someone with you after a surgery.

During the procedure

The surgery can take less than 10 seconds per eye and it's completely pain-free.

You will be given Valium 15 minutes before the surgery to calm your nerves. Immediately when you get up from the surgery, you should see clearly.

After the procedure

After your eyes are checked, you will be given another Valium to help you rest your eyes. After you wake up, you can go about your normal routine, watch TV, etc., and be back at work the next day.

You will then use preservative-free eye drops to help with dryness for a couple of months.
