‘Cheat codes of basketball’: Former Spur George Hill happy to hold annual camp

The 2008 San Antonio Spurs first-round draft pick enjoys giving back to the community

SAN ANTONIO – Even though he only played for the San Antonio Spurs for three seasons, George Hill always enjoys giving back to the San Antonio community.

His annual basketball camp was a hit, as around 100 campers were in attendance at the “Ballin in the 210″ camp, who all got hands-on coaching from the 15-year NBA veteran.

The camp was split up into two gyms at Sonia Sotomayor High School, with younger basketball players in one gym and older players in another. Hill took time to chat with groups from each gym and give out pointers on the finer points of ball handling and body control when driving to the basket.

KSAT chatted with Hill and asked him about his motivation to continue holding the camp for San Antonio kids.

“I mean, it’s fun you know, I remember when I was that age and wish I had people that I could look up to show me the little, almost like the cheat codes of basketball sort of in this aspect,” said Hill. “But to see the smile on her face, to see that learning getting better, I’ve seen kids from that came to the camp last year to this year, and the first thing they said, it was like, I’ve been working on these drills you showed me. You can tell that they have, their upside has got a lot better and, it all works.

Hill also mentioned how giving back has helped him appreciate life a little more while passing down his knowledge to the next generation.

While currently a free agent, Hill still has the opportunity to join another NBA roster this offseason, maybe even the Spurs. In the meantime, Hill is enjoying living life on his 900-acre ranch in the Hill Country.
