UTSA baseball takes dead aim at NCAA Tournament fueled by last season’s abrupt AAC tourney exit

At the Roadrunners’ Media Day, the players shared what’s on their minds entering 2025

SAN ANTONIO – As the UTSA baseball team prepares for its season opener in a week, unfinished business appears to be on the minds of its players heading into this season.

The Roadrunners will kick off their 2025 campaign on Feb. 14 on the road against the University of Texas at Arlington followed by a trip to Waco to face Baylor.

UTSA will host Long Island University in a four-game series beginning Feb. 21.

With an influx of new faces from the transfer portal, the team has its eye on making a run for the American Athletic Conference (AAC) tournament championship.

Senior outfielder Mason Lytle, who was named the AAC’s Preseason Player of the Year in December, will be a key piece in a potential run to the NCAA Tournament.

Last season, Lytle hit .352 with 11 home runs, 19 doubles, and 43 runs batted in. His slugging percentage of .590 as well as 17 stolen bases in 18 attempts make him a threat at the plate and on the basepaths.

The Roadrunners are not shying away from a tough schedule this season. They will face four teams currently ranked in the top 25, including tilts against Texas A&M and Texas.

Last year’s one-run loss to the Aggies adds a layer of anticipation for this year’s rematch.

Despite being picked to finish fifth in the AAC after last year’s second-place finish, the Roadrunners said they are determined to defy expectations and secure a spot in the NCAA tournament.
