SAN ANTONIO – Two unbeaten district rivals will put their perfect records on the line this week when Boerne visits Alamo Heights in KSAT 12’s Week 5 Big Game Coverage Game of the Week.
Both teams enter the matchup at 4-0 after strong non-district starts. It will be their first meeting since last season’s Class 5A Division II regional final, when Boerne edged Alamo Heights 56-49 on a last-minute touchdown.
This time, the stakes are different — but still important. Friday’s game marks the district opener for both programs, giving the winner an early advantage in the race for playoff positioning.
“It’s a huge game,” Boerne senior cornerback Austin Gerbes said. “It’s the first game of district. This can set the mood for how we play the rest of the season.”
“When district starts is when the real season starts,” Boerne football head coach Brett Sawyer said. “All the pre-district stuff is to get you ready for this, and getting to play Alamo Heights first — after a couple of good games with them last year — is exciting. It should be one of those games you don’t have to get everybody excited for. They should already be there.”
The Greyhounds have been consistent on offense, scoring at least 30 points in each of their first four games. Still, players believe their best football is ahead of them.
“Everybody thinks that we haven’t really been playing our best,” Boerne senior offensive tackle Parker Young said. “We’re not clicking on all cylinders yet, but the attitude’s changing in practice. People are a lot more excited, so I think we’re getting better.”
Alamo Heights will have the benefit of home-field advantage at Orem Stadium and brings in an explosive offense averaging 46.5 points per game through non-district play. The Mules have plenty of momentum, but head coach Rudy Nerio said the focus remains on their own preparation.
“It’s just the next game,” Nerio said. “We don’t hardly talk about opponents. We always talk about our process and making sure we have the end in mind. It’s how we build practices, it’s how we prepare, and we’re not preparing any different than we do on a normal week.”
“They’re a good team, but we’re really focusing on ourselves and what we can do,” senior wide receiver Landon Balldin said. “It’s about how we can prepare for them and be the best team we can be.”
“We’re going to prepare every week how we always do,” Mules senior safety Lee Brockwell said. “It’s our process, and we’re excited to compete this week.”
“They’re great. They’ve got dudes all over the field,” Brockwell added. “But we’re worried about ourselves, and we’re going to go compete like we know we can.”
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday at Orem Stadium. The KSAT 12 Sports team will have extended coverage of the matchup on the Nightbeat and the BGC Highlight Show later that evening.
