The Gold Cup is a continental championship that takes place every two years, and is the official national team championship of the region, which includes North and Central America and the Caribbean.

Mexico played the United States in front of a sold-out crowd of 64,369 at the Alamodome in April 2015.

A year earlier in January 2014, Mexico played South Korea at the Alamodome in front of 54,313 fans.

Both those games were international friendly matchups. This will be the first competitive international match Mexico has played in the San Antonio area.

Mexico's opponent or the other two nations playing in San Antonio has not been determined.

The complete groups and the full schedule will be announced next year.
