Although a 51-48 double overtime win over I-35 rivals, Texas State, in their season opener doesn’t hurt, Runners fans were already poised to embrace first year UTSA head coach, Jeff Traylor, in his first game heading the team. Caleb Hopkins, a 2016 UTSA alumnus, said it’s been a few years since there was this much energy surrounding the program. “I’m super excited," said Laura. Fans will get to another chance to see the Runners in action in their home opener Saturday when UTSA hosts Stephen F. Austin at the Alamodome at 2pm.

But the season opener at Bobcat Stadium looked different from years prior: the athletic department implemented several new health and safety measures designed to combat COVID-19 this football season. Steven Granados, the Director of Marketing and Guest Experience for Chartwells Higher Education, caterer and concessions vendor for Texas State Athletics, said the company has installed protective barriers and QR codes in place of menus. Im super impressed, said Strutters Captain and Texas State senior, Macey Phillips. I know not a lot of other universities are as capable of doing what were doing today so Im super excited and hope that it works out.

We have been working in conjunction with the NCAA, the Sun Belt Conference, university, federal, state, and local agencies to keep Bobcat Athletics facilities safe and within the State of Texas guidelines. We look forward to seeing Bobcat fans cheering on our teams this fall.”Before attending a game at Bobcat Stadium, university officials said spectators are encouraged to undergo a self-screening for COVID-19 symptoms. Hand sanitizer stations and social distancing signage will be placed throughout Bobcat Stadium as well.
