It’s been a year since Boerne Police Department launched its mental health unit, and the officer in charge says the success is measured in community education.

The shooting happened after the officer responded to the Carrington Apartments in the 800 block of Johns Road to perform a welfare check for a person who was suicidal.

The City of Boerne is taking a proactive approach to address a trend they have been tracking regarding mental health calls Boerne police have been experiencing.

Cullen Condon, 25, was shot by a Boerne Police officer after reportedly pointing a gun at officers. A neighbor says Condon didn't seem to be in his right mind and was trying to shoot his way into her home.

The officers involved have been identified as Boerne police officers Paul Bilotta, a 14-year veteran and James Schmidt, a 5-year veteran; and Kendall County Deputy Rollin Senger, a 7-year veteran.
