(AP Photo/LM Otero, File)The largest and oldest power cooperative in Texas is filing for bankruptcy protection, citing last month’s winter storm that left millions without power, and it is unlikely to be the last utility to seek shelter in the courts. Brazos Electric Power Cooperative serves distributors that supply electricity to more than 1.5 million Texans in 68 counties from the Panhandle to Houston. Brazos said Monday that it was a “financially robust, stable company” before the Arctic freeze that hit Texas between Feb. 13 and Feb. 19. Ed Hirs, who teaches energy economics at the University of Houston, is sure there will be more power company bankruptcies.

The district would stretch east to west from Brazos to Zarzamora, and north to south from Buena Vista to Cesar Chavez. Three virtual public meetings will be held on Aug. 7 at 3 p.m. , Aug. 19 at 10 a.m. and Sept. 12 at 11 a.m. to discuss the proposed historic district. Benefits for owner-occupied homes included in the boundary include 20% off city taxes for 10 years and the opportunity to extend the incentive for five years after.

Authorities had to rescue both the man and woman from the vehicle with the jaws of life. Officials said the man was unresponsive but was taken to the Brooke Army Medical Center in critical condition. Authorities said they believe speed was a factor in the crash but they are also investigating to see if alcohol was involved.
