SAN ANTONIO – City crews cleared out a homeless camp in downtown San Antonio Wednesday and cleaned the area following a string of violent crimes and health hazards, police said. The decision to shut down the camp of about 50 tents at the overpass at Interstate 37 and Brooklyn was made after the San Antonio Police Department evaluated the situation a week ago, SAPD Sgt. Health hazards were another reason for the shutdown, including the discovery of feces around the camp, Reuter said. AdDuring the visit last week, Reuter said that outreach options were offered to a number of veterans at the camp. Laura Elizabeth Mayes, assistant director for government and public affairs for the City of San Antonio, released the following statement to KSAT about the camp’s shutdown:This abatement is consistent with the priorities of the City’s recovery and resiliency plan.

The strategic plan was developed by California-based nonprofit Homebase and includes recommendations such as increasing the investment in outreach teams and community-based housing and services. RECOMMENDATION #5: Develop detailed prioritization policies and targeted interventions to most effectively connect persons experiencing unsheltered homelessness to stable housing. RECOMMENDATION #6: Increase focus on consumer engagement and equity throughout the homelessness response system.

SAN ANTONIO – City officials reported 68,699 total COVID-19 cases and 1,285 total deaths in Bexar County, as of Wednesday, an increase of 332 new cases. No new deaths were reported today. The 7-day moving average of cases is 239. City officials also reported that 326 patients are hospitalized, 125 are in the intensive care unit and 60 are on ventilators. Officials said there were 38 new hospital admissions in the past 24 hours.

SAN ANTONIO – Human remains have been discovered at Milam Park as part of an archaeological and cultural investigation, according to a press release from the city of San Antonio. City Archaeologist Shawn Marceaux provided the following statement in regards to the discovery:On Wednesday, May 13, the archaeological investigation for the Santa Rosa Street 2017 bond project identified what are likely human burial remains. The Office of Historic Preservation City Archaeologists were first notified by the Principal Archaeologist for Pape-Dawson Wednesday morning. City, state, and project officials, and local descendant groups, were notified of the discovery per requirements in the Texas Antiquities Permit and Human Burial Remains Protocol. “The Cultural Investigation was built into the Bond Project timeline at a cost of $270,000.00 for the archaeological work,” city spokesperson Joe Conger told KSAT via email.

SAN ANTONIO – As Americans who have been potentially exposed to the 2019 novel coronavirus land in San Antonio on Thursday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention held a news conference with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This week, planes carrying U.S. citizens in Wuhan China are set to arrive at bases in three states: California, Texas and Nebraska. The passengers will remain at the bases after a federal quarantine order was issued. “This legal order is intended to protect the repatriated citizens, their families and the community,” officials said in a news release. SAN ANTONIO – The Centers for Disease Control announced that a group of people who were in China and potentially exposed to the coronavirus is arriving in San Antonio on Thursday. The group will be housed at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, which is one of four coronavirus quarantine zones in the United States. San Antonio city officials, along with regional public health partners, also answered questions about the coronavirus, including what it means to have coronavirus evacuees at JBSA-Lackland. "Folks that are being quarantined in these military installations, they are being isolated away from the general population. Assistant City Manager Colleen Bridger said in there are no cases of the coronavirus in Bexar County or Texas.

The passengers will be met by a team of CDC personnel to assess their health when they arrive. CDC staff will conduct risk assessments to ensure the health of each traveler, including temperature checks and observing for respiratory symptoms, officials said. Some passengers being evacuated from China to the U.S. in response to the coronavirus outbreak in that country will be housed at JBSA-Lackland. CDC officials will work with the state and local public health departments to transport any passenger exhibiting symptoms to a hospital for further evaluation. The virus has infected more than 20,000 people across 26 countries and territories and killed more than 420, but the majority of cases -- currently an estimated 78% -- are coming from Hubei province in China, officials said.

KIRBY, Texas – Kirby council members have asked staff to crunch numbers to assess the pros and cons of a boundary expansion in the future. The city, which has a population of about 8,300 people and is two-square miles, says it needs to find more revenue sources. City leaders are asking to see if there is any financial benefits to current residents and to the future of the city if it expands. The city is surrounded by San Antonio and Bexar County. The City of Converse already has a plan that will expand its boundary closer to the City of Kirby by 2033.

San Antonio – City leaders from the private and public sectors will head to the nation's capital next week with hopes of bringing some federal dollars back with them. The San Antonio Chamber of Commerce has organized an “SA to DC” trip for 42 years, and next week’s trip - from Sunday to Thursday - will have the largest-ever delegation with more than 200 members. Business leaders, city council members, and representatives from agencies like SAWS and VIA will promote San Antonio’s interests to elected leaders and federal agencies alike. Jeff Coyle, the city’s director of government and public affairs, describes the lobbying effort for federal money as a “two-step dance” of sorts. “That was on our federal agenda for like nine years for it until we finally got it added into the appropriation and then get it funded,” Perez said.
