They decided in a 5 to 2 vote, making the use of a face-covering optional for students and staff members. Mona Ramirez, who is a Comal ISD parent, said the problem was the notification was vague. Unlike Comal ISD, New Braunfels ISD asked parents and staff members to participate in a thought exchange where they were allowed to contribute their preferences on continuing the face mask mandate. Ramirez has since started a change.org petition to get Comal ISD board members to reconsider their decision.

District officials say the district’s success in the nearly year-long struggle with the coronavirus can be directly attributed to its COVID-19 health and safety protocols: daily health screening, social distancing, good hygiene practices and face coverings. However, the district’s board of trustees amended the health and safety guidelines to allow parents and teachers a choice regarding facial coverings, beginning on March 10. “While the choice to wear a face mask is now up to you, please note that quarantine protocols will still be in effect,” said David Drastata, president of Comal ISD’s board of trustees. “By choosing to have your child wear a mask, you are doing your part to keep our schools open for the next 10 weeks and provide our students the educational opportunities they deserve,” Drastata said.

Comal ISD was one of only 18 districts across Texas to receive the statewide award two years in a row. “These additional opportunities enhance our program, and we are proud to be named once more." The award recognizes districts with outstanding leadership in promoting the arts throughout their district as well as their community. Comal ISD said 46 art teachers work in their elementary, middle and high school campuses and that 15,170 students participate in art classes.

As of Thursday, Comal County reported there are now 2,313, COVID-19 cases in the area, with the latest 26 new cases. Students who choose to stay at Canyon will complete their high school years there. Canyon High School freshman wins holiday card contestIf students don’t sign the transfer form, they will begin to attend Davenport High School when it opens next school year. Current Danville Middle School eighth grade students with an older sibling who will attend Canyon next school year are eligible to attend the school.
