Greg Zuerlein kicked a 46-yard field goal as time expired, and the Cowboys overcame four fumbles and a 20-point deficit in the first quarter to beat the Atlanta Falcons 40-39 on Sunday. The Falcons pushed the lead to 39-24 on Younghoe Koo's fourth field goal with just under eight minutes left. Calvin Ridley was the leader for the Falcons this week with 109 yards and two touchdowns.

Now the Cowboys (0-1) will see whether a short-term loss can turn into a long-term gain, starting Sunday in their home opener against Atlanta (0-1). WHAT NEEDS HELPThe Cowboys played from behind almost all of the first half because they couldn't defend the screen pass. Vander Esch's injury raises serious questions for the linebackers when the secondary was already the weakest link on the team. The scoreboard didn't show it, but Dallas appears capable of having an offense as productive as last season's top-ranked unit.

FRISCO, Texas Dak Prescott wants his teammates on the Dallas Cowboys to decide for themselves whether to protest during the national anthem. Owner Jerry Jones hasn't said in so many words, but it appears his hard-line stance requiring players to stand during the anthem has eased amid a national reckoning over racial justice. We all do understand where I stand relative to the national anthem and the flag. As we heard Mr. Jones talk about grace and sharing grace and having grace with players in what they want to do. Jones seems to understand that kneeling before the anthem might not be enough this time.

If youre not trying to win a Super Bowl, I dont know what youre even doing in this business, McCarthy said. The ones that dont talk about it are probably trying to underpromise, overachieve. The dynamic former Oklahoma receiver joins Amari Cooper, who signed a $100 million contract, and the promising young Michael Gallup. McCarthy probably doesn't have another Rodgers in terms of pure ability, but Prescott is capable of leading postseason run that would probably secure long-term contract he's been trying to get since early 2019.

FRISCO, Texas Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Gerald McCoy is out for the season after tearing the quadriceps tendon in his right leg in the first padded practice of training camp Monday. Executive vice president of personnel Stephen Jones said McCoy would have surgery soon. Jones said McCoy was working against Antwaun Woods in individual drills when Woods stepped on his foot. McCoy was the first of four significant additions on the defensive line in free agency. Hill couldn't really break the rotation for the defensive line during a rough rookie season.

Jerry Jones sidestepped the question of whether he would change his policy requiring Dallas Cowboys players to stand during the national anthem. Two years ago, Jones wouldn't even support players staying in the locker room during the national anthem, declaring the club's policy was for players to be on the sideline, toe on the line." I have nothing to prove as far as where Im standing with the flag and where the Cowboys stand. We have many on that team that were thinking about one way and many, many others that were thinking about another way, Jones said. Im going to show grace, Jones said.
