SAN ANTONIO – This holiday season, KSAT Community held its annual ‘Share the Shoes’ drive with SAPD substations to benefit Zapatos, Inc.With help from the community of San Antonio, 2,070 shoes were collected for children on all ages. “We have approximately 2,070 shoes that have been donated, it was double of what we did last year,” said SAPD Officer Doug Greene. Vans and police cars were being loaded up this morning throughout San Antonio to help distribute the shoes to the six SAPD substations. No child should be burdened by the shoes on their feet and no family should have to decide between shoes and dinner. KSAT Community operates in partnership with University Health, Energy Transfer and Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union.

SAN ANTONIO – A person visiting a loved one at a nursing home found some human remains Wednesday morning on the city’s Southeast Side, police said. According to Officer Doug Greene, a spokesman for the San Antonio Police Department, skeletal remains were found around 11:30 a.m. in a wooded area behind the Rio at Mission Trails nursing home. Greene said due to the composition of the remains, it’s difficult to determine a gender. Officers are canvassing the area for clues. Anyone who may have information about the case is asked to call SAPD.

SAN ANTONIO – A good pair of shoes is a need we often take for granted, and for so many children in San Antonio that need is real. This November, KSAT Community is joining in the effort to make sure kids have proper footwear by teaming up with local nonprofit Zapatos, Inc. and the San Antonio Police Department for the annual KSAT Community “Share the Shoes” drive to collect new shoes of all sizes for toddlers and teenagers. “All of us, as members of this community, have a shared responsibility to address the needs we see arise in our neighborhoods," said Doug Greene, SAPD Officer for the Media Services Department. "Through SAPD’s day to day duties and response to calls for service, the needs of children are what impacts us most. One need we witness for children is the lack of shoes.

SAN ANTONIO – School used to be a safe haven for children experiencing or witnessing abuse at home. She focuses on Northside ISD, while the other two caseworkers focus mainly on San Antonio ISD and East Central ISD. “Friends and family, and parents and teachers making those referrals, site coordinators making those referrals,” Sandoval said. Greene also wants families to know they can always get in contact with police about domestic violence situations. Every substation, including Public Safety Headquarters downtown, has a Crisis Response Team comprised of officers and advocates who specifically work with domestic violence victims.

SAN ANTONIO – An 89-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of his wife Thursday morning on the city’s Southeast Side. According to booking records, George Holland has been charged with murder in the slaying of the woman, whose name has not been released. Records indicate that the woman, who is in her 80s and has the same last name as the suspect, was shot several times. Officer Doug Greene, a police spokesman, said the neighbors called 911 around 9:30 after making the discovery in the 100 block of Mendoza Street. A motive hasn’t been established, but Greene said the couple had health issues, but wasn’t specific on what type.

SAN ANTONIO San Antonio Police Department investigators urged the public on Tuesday to help them crack several unsolved cases following a weekend of shootings in the Alamo City. Unfortunately, in this line of work its something that we deal with on a constant basis, said San Antonio Police Officer Doug Greene, as he reflected on the hectic weekend. Some people who were shot are in critical condition, as I speak, or in the hospital, Greene said. The shopping area, usually considered safe, turned into a crime scene as investigators searched for evidence. This Fourth of July, San Antonio police made 11 DWI arrests. Even though San Antonio city and Bexar County parks were closed, and major events throughout the area were canceled, this year’s numbers weren’t much lower than last year’s when there were 15. SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police said they’ve received 1,313 calls for social distancing-related violations since the city’s emergency declaration went into effect. The problem, officials say, is that some of those calls came in through 911, which is a line that should only be used only for emergencies. On the other hand, Greene isn’t saying emergency declaration violations shouldn’t be reported at all. “We do have the non-emergency number, which is 210-207-(7273), which we would prefer people to utilize,” Greene said. SAN ANTONIO – It seems the COVID-19 pandemic has led to fewer people drinking and driving, as there have been a lot fewer DWI arrests in our area. Between March 18 and April 13, SAPD reported that officers made 147 DWI arrests. Compare that to the 25 days before the mayor's order, where SAPD reported 318 DWI-related arrests. That’s compared to 60 DWI arrests in the 25 days prior to the order. On San Pedro Avenue, establishments that sell to-go drinks, like Beer N All, had lines at the drive-thru Wednesday.

A confrontation between the man and the officers resulted in the man being shot in the upper torso, Greene said. The officer who fatally shot the man, a two-year veteran, will be placed on administrative duty pending an investigation, which is normal police procedure for officer-involved shootings.
