Burbank High School graduate Marisol Cortez was among only 10 students awarded a Cesar Chavez Scholarship in 2020 when the fund was at its lowest during the pandemic.

The Immaculate Conception Catholic Church hosted the 13th annual Thanksgiving in the Barrio on Monday. The event provided groceries for a Thanksgiving meal, complete with all the trimmings, to 400 families.

They're a family of ten who are without a home and staying at Haven for Hope. That isn't stopping seven of their kids from getting excited to go back to school. It's an adjustment, but they're getting help from Haven for Hope staff.

SAN ANTONIO – The 25th anniversary of the Cesar E. Chavez March for Justice honoring the legacy of the iconic labor organizer has gone virtual this year. Martinez said he was able to do it thanks to David Chavez, who has no relation to Cesar Chavez. He said David Chavez has worked with the Cesar Chavez family and the United Farmworkers that the labor leader co-founded. Among his company’s most recent high profile projects was President Joe Biden’s Latino virtual inaugural event. Chavez said taking a live event into a virtual sphere is a challenge.

SAN ANTONIO Fewer high school graduates will receive scholarships or laptops from the Cesar E. Chavez Legacy and Educational Foundation due to the COVID-19 pandemic hampering fundraising efforts, according to Ernest Martinez, organization chairman. Ernest Martinez is the son of the late Jaime Martinez, who created the foundation to honor Chavez, the labor organizer who was his mentor. Until the pandemic hit, the foundation was on track to see a record turnout for the annual Cesar Chavez March for Justice through San Antonio's West Side. Ernest Martinez said the organization was on pace to raise $35,000 to reward deserving high school graduates. Among the recipients is Marisol Cortez, a 2020 Burbank High School graduate who chose Bates College to fulfill a purpose to give back.
