SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio teacher was fired for continuing to wear a Black Lives Matter face mask, even though it was against school policy, according to a CNN report. Lillian White, an art teacher at the Great Hearts Western Hills public charter school in San Antonio, started wearing the face mask once the school reopened for in-person classes. When she was wearing the mask, which read “Black Lives Matter” and Silence is Violence," students were not back on campus, CNN reports. White told CNN she wore the mask to “demonstrate her support for Black students and faculty,” and to also “advocate for an anti-racism action plan and a more diverse curriculum." On Sept. 5, White was told by the school her employment was terminated for her refusal to wear a different mask, CNN reports.

By now, wearing a face mask when you’re out and about or around crowds of people should be nothing new. Here’s what the WHO had to say about using a fabric mask:Wash your hands before putting on the mask. If you need to use the mask again, hold it at the elastic loops when removing it from the bag. If hot water is not available, wash the mask in soap or detergent and room-temperature water, followed by either boiling the mask for 1 minute OR; by soaking the mask in 0.1% chlorine for 1 minute and thoroughly rinsing the mask with room-temperature water (there should not be any toxic residue of chlorine on the mask). Make sure you’re continuing to socially distance yourself from people who aren’t in your household, keep washing those hands and try to avoid touching your face as much as possible.

Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff and San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg announced a new executive order Wednesday following a surge in COVID-19 cases. If you need help with the Public File, call 210-351-1241.

Mayor Ron Nirenberg issued an addendum to his latest declaration of public health emergency that adopts and supports Wolff’s order. Though individuals are also required to wear masks, they will not face any punishment if they don’t. Wolff’s order is in effect until June 30. Businesses have until Monday to post their health and safety policy, Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales said. Now that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending people wear cloth face coverings in public settings, Disney is getting in on the face mask game, and making masks featuring your favorite Disney characters. Disney said the company would donate all profits from the sales in the U.S. of Disney’s cloth face masks to Medshare, now through Sept. 30. That’s right, you can have Baby Yoda on your face mask while you grocery shop at Trader Joe’s. In addition to donating the proceeds of these colorful masks, Disney said it will donate 1 million cloth face masks to children and families in vulnerable communities across the United States. From Elsa, Anna, Buzz and Woody, there is a face mask for every Disney fan.

SAN ANTONIO – Long before the mask ordinance went into effect in San Antonio, a local third grader from Elrod Elementary was making masks for his neighbors, healthcare workers and even for people as far as Singapore. “So, I taught him how to crochet, so, he started making ear straps, (he would )crochet the yarn.
