Read full article: Fiesta Oyster Bake canceled in 2021 due to continued surge in COVID-19 casesSAN ANTONIO – The Fiesta Oyster Bake at St. Mary’s University has been canceled for a second year due to the coronavirus pandemic. “I am sad to announce that we are canceling Fiesta Oyster Bake 2021 due to the substantial numbers of COVID-19 cases in our region,” association president Joe L. Vela Jr. said in a news release. The Oyster Bake is one of Fiesta’s biggest events, drawing in about 60,000-70,000 fans to the university’s grounds. San Antonio officials had hoped to postpone Fiesta events to Nov. 5-15, 2020, but those plans were scrapped as virus cases continued to increase. The COVID-19 case count reached 155,588 total on Thursday, an increase of 2,507 new cases from the day prior.

Vienna Nguyen, 17, of Providence Catholic School, had her design chosen among many that were entered. She said the club gave her the opportunity to create her first Fiesta medal design and that her 2019 and 2020 designs were also chosen by Providence High School. “The fireworks and floral border were inspired from the Providence’s 2019 Fiesta medal,” Nguyen said. Ms. Gonzales-McDonald and Ms. Martinez had planned on announcing it to the school when the medal was revealed during Fiesta,” Nguyen said.

The Witte Museum will open the “Fiesta Couture: Behind the Seams” exhibit on Saturday, shining a light on the art and skill that go into the making of the dresses worn in the Coronation of the Queen of the Order of the Alamo. City to make announcement on Fiesta this week, mayor saysAccording to the Witte, the annual event is organized around a theme that is selected two years in advance. The exhibit is included in the museum admission. Fiesta was postponed in the spring as the city saw the first impacts of the coronavirus crisis.
