SAN ANTONIO – Fireworks won’t be the only reason to look to the sky on the Fourth of July! According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the first full moon of the summer, otherwise known as the Buck Moon, is taking to the skies just before the midnight hour on Saturday. There will also be a partial penumbral lunar eclipse, NASA officials said. This process is known as a partial penumbral eclipse. The moon will appear full for about three days around the eclipse, from Friday evening into Monday morning, and NASA officials said this will be a full moon weekend.

COMAL COUNTY, Texas – With Bexar County and San Antonio city parks closed Friday through Sunday due to a surge in COVID-19 cases, Canyon Lake is seeing especially increased volume for the holiday weekend. Officials say the increase in visitors is likely due to the temporary shutdown of the public parks, meaning increased vigilance for firefighters guarding the lake. Marine 53, a fireboat, will be staffed with trained professionals who are going to be patrolling the lake. The extra safety measures come as San Antonio area health officials announced increased hospitalizations following Memorial Day. While the firefighters patrolling Canyon Lake are equipped to handle on scene emergencies, they want to remind the community how important it is for folks to heed the guidelines issued in the fight against COVID-19.

SCHERTZ, Texas – Nearly 6,000 American flags now line Schertz Parkway thanks to one local Eagle Scout who is determined to show off his patriotic spirit. Eagle Scout candidate Kyle Dorsey, with the help of Schertz Boy Scout Troop 51, lined both sides of a 2.5-mile stretch of the parkway Friday morning. Their efforts are part of a new program called Project Flagline, which is meant to lift spirits after the cancellation of the City of Schertz Independence Day Parade and Jubilee. SAN ANTONIO – In this instance, hand sanitizer is not the way to go. Safety officials are reminding people ahead of Fourth of July celebrations that hand sanitizer and fireworks are a dangerous mix. While hand sanitizer has become the go-to precaution amid the coronavirus pandemic, it contains alcohol, which is highly flammable. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises keeping a bucket of water or a water hose nearby in case of a mishap. The commission also says young children shouldn’t handle fireworks, including sparklers, as some sparklers are hot enough to burn certain metals.

SAN ANTONIO – Nicole Miranda, 24, is quarantined after recently finding out she tested positive for COVID-19. On Thursday afternoon, local hospital leaders asked the community to do its part as hospitals inch closer to reaching capacity. “Please, please, please wear a mask,” said Matthew Stone, CEO of Baptist Health System. Allen Harrison, with Methodist Health Care System, said two weeks ago, they had 75 positive COVID-19 patients, and on Thursday, they were at 343. Methodist is currently taking care of 10 COVID-19 patients with this alternative respiratory treatment.

SAN ANTONIO – Medina Lake Park in Bandera County will be closed this Fourth of July weekend due to the coronavirus pandemic. The park, which is operated by the county, will stay closed until Wednesday, July 8, due to the virus, according to officials. The boat ramp at the park will also be closed to the public. Medina Lake Park is just one of the dozens of recreational areas in Central and South Texas that will not be open during the biggest holiday of the summer due to the virus. Cameron County, which includes South Padre Island, has also announced all county parks and county beaches will be closed over the weekend.

Greg Abbott issued an executive order Friday morning that requires all rafting and tubing businesses to close, just ahead of the Fourth of July weekend. “As I said from the start, if the positivity rate rose above 10%, the State of Texas would take further action to mitigate the spread of COVID-19,” Abbott said Friday. The executive order also states that “transportation of people for the purpose of rafting or tubing” is also prohibited.

SAN ANTONIO – The annual Fourth of July Celebration and fireworks show at Woodlawn Lake Park has been canceled this year out of an abundance of caution to help slow the spread of COVID-19, city officials said Tuesday. The celebration is a city of San Antonio-sanctioned event. The actions we take now will ensure that we are all around for holidays and celebrations next year,” said Mayor Ron Nirenberg. City parks and trails will remain open over the holiday weekend. City officials want to remind residents to practice social distancing when visiting city parks and trails.

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – UPDATE: The City of New Braunfels has postponed its fireworks display over Landa Park due to Governor Greg Abbott’s new order in response to COVID-19. PREVIOUSLY:The annual Fourth of July Parade in New Braunfels this year has been canceled, but you’ll still be able to enjoy the city’s annual fireworks spectacular. “We are pleased to still be able to provide the fireworks spectacular to give our citizens a beautiful and patriotic show while celebrating our country in a safe manner. SAN ANTONIO – Despite a pandemic, dips in city pools will continue this summer. San Antonio’s Parks and Recreation Department has announced that 11 outdoor pools and five splash pads are scheduled to reopen on July 3. The pools, including the ones at San Pedro Springs Park and Woodlawn Lake Park, will remain open throughout Aug. 9. The splash pads will stay open through November as usual, the city says.
