Transgender Texans are facing a new hurdle as their driver’s licenses can no longer be changed to align with their gender identity.

In March, the federal government said providers can’t deny gender care to transgender people that would be provided to others for other purposes.

Recent state and local legal maneuvers signal that Texas’ conservative movement could be wading into a complicated Constitutional morass the country hasn’t dealt with since before the Civil War.

On the same day the Texas Legislature is set to debate Senate Bill 14, a proposed ban on puberty blockers and hormone therapy for kids, the attorney general files a request to examine documents related to the use of puberty blockers and counseling for trans youth.

Opponents of the bill call it a “power play aimed at making the lives of transgender children as difficult as possible.”

The bill, which has the blessing of Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, will create new rules on how gender and sexual orientation is taught. It will face a tougher test in the House.
